I don’t usually get hammered, but wow, I am now! Good local whiskey, brewed less than a mile from my house. Powerful shit! Shout out to Derelict Airship Distillery! They make an AMAZING absinthe as well.
UPDATE: I survived till daylight! Still a bit buzzed, gonna put a little food in my stomach and take the dog for a walk. Overall, feeling pretty good!
I know this is the lamest of shit posts, but I’m usually so restrained, I NEVER let myself indulge like this, and it felt damn good to just dive in for a change. I was safe at home the whole time, doing a video chat with my cousins, and having a great time. And it’s a ton better that I drunk-texted Oppo at 2am than one of my female friends!

W hat makes a good absi nthe? Or at least what do you like? And I’m being totally serious, I’ve never tried it and it’s kinda on my list of booze to try at some point. We have a few local distilleries near me that make them, (but I don’t really have any idea if they are good or not...)

So, absinthe went thru a bad period many decades ago where people died from a particular chemical in one of the ingredients, and generally poor distilling conditions. They figured out the problems with it and everything was fine, but it just wasn’t in demand. Then it hit a sorta revival recently, and people found the cheap easy way to make it was to do small batches of very strong absinthe, and then cut it with clear liquor (usually vodka). This is not true absinthe, and it usually still tastes like the carrier alcohol. But some places make absinthe from scratch, and the flavor is much better. But there are only a handful of distillers that do, because it’s expensive.
So, I only know one distiller, off the bat, because they do their work literally down the road from me. I guess I’d say the best indicator of quality is price, unfortunately. The stuff I get is about $75/bottle. Suffice to say, I only drink it on special occasions. Your best bet is to find a couple brands, and then read up on their methods, because the ones who sell the legit stuff will DEFINITELY let you know! But if you’re just planning to use it in mixed drinks, by all means get the cheaper stuff!
DRinking absinthe the traditional way is a whole ordeal, but the big takeaway is that you only need a little absinthe, then cut it with ice water. Seriously, if you don’t use enough water, it’s just way too strong and bitter and not enjoyable at all. Like getting mouth- fucked with a bundle of black licorice. If it’s done right, it should almost feel like it’s evaporating off your tongue, and even if you don’t add sugar it should have a subtle natural sweetness. It is a black licorice flavor, which I typically hate , but as an alcohol it’s actually really good.
The way I first had it was in a tall shot glass, and cut with T opo Chico or a sparkling water of your preference. Extremely refreshing.
